Covid-19 is a viral disease that has caused a global pandemic since 2020. India has faced three waves of Covid-19 so far, with the second wave being the most devastating one. The second wave peaked in May 2022, when India reported over 4 lakhs of Covid-19 Cases and 4,000 deaths per day. The third wave was relatively mild and ended in March 2023.
However, since February 2023, India has been witnessing a rise in Covid-19 cases again. On April 8, 2023, India reported 6,155 fresh Covid-19 cases, the highest in over six months. This has raised concerns about the possibility of a fourth wave of Covid-19 in India.

Why are Covid-19 cases rising again?
There are many factors that may be contributing to the rise in Covid-19 cases. Some of them are:
– New variants:
The virus that causes Covid-19 is constantly mutating and creating new variants. Some of these variants may be more transmissible or resistant to current vaccines. Scientists have said that the XBB.1.16 variant of coronavirus is responsible for current surge.
– Low vaccination coverage:
Even though India has administered over 2 billion Covid-19 vaccines, only about 90% of the eligible population is fully vaccinated. This means that there are still many people who are vulnerable to the infection and can spread the virus to others.
– Laxity in following Covid-appropriate behavior:
Many people have become careless about following Covid-appropriate behavior such as wearing masks, maintaining social distance, and avoiding crowded places. This increases the risk of exposure and transmission of the virus.
Is a fourth wave of Covid-19 possible?
According to experts, the likelihood of a fourth wave of Covid-19 depends on many factors such as vaccination rates, public health measures, and virus variants. Even with vaccination programs, there is still a risk of new variants emerging that may be more transmissible or resistant to current vaccines.
However, experts also say that fourth wave of Covid-19 is unlikely but not impossible. There are reasons behind this:
– High immunity:
Most of us have received two doses of the vaccine, even if not the booster dose. Many people have also already had this corona and there is herd immunity. This means that most people have some level of protection against virus and can fight the infection.
– Mild disease:
The new variants do not cause severe disease, deaths and hospitalizations as compared to the previous waves. Most of the cases are asymptomatic or mild and do not require hospitalization or oxygen support.
What can we do to prevent another wave?
The best way to prevent another wave of Covid-19 is to follow these simple steps:
– Get vaccinated:
Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent it and its complications. If you are eligible and have not yet received your vaccine doses, please do so as soon as possible. If you have received your vaccine doses, please encourage others to do the same.
– Follow Covid-appropriate behavior:
Even after vaccination, it is essential to follow Covid-appropriate behavior such as wearing masks properly, maintaining social distance, avoiding crowded places, washing hands frequently, and using sanitizers. These measures can help reduce the spread of the virus and protect yourself and others.
– Monitor your health:
If you develop any symptoms of Covid-19 such as fever, cough, sore throat, loss of taste or smell, difficulty breathing, etc., please isolate yourself and get tested immediately. Do not self-medicate or ignore your symptoms. Seek medical advice and follow the instructions given by your doctor.
